came into being

Hello,

Could you please help me with this sentence? I don't know how to translate the verb plus what I suppose it is the object...

It has been written by the philosopher Henri Lefebvre.

Could it be that the space of the finest cities came into being after the fashion of plants and flowers in a garden - after the fashion, in other words, of works of nature, just as unique as they, albeit fashioned by highly civilized people?

Thanks in advance.
María
