Hello, everyone! Today I want to ask about a grammatical issue.

Can an adjective modify a gerund?

#1 There was no hope of his returning safe.
#2 There was no hope of his safe returning.

I think #1 is grammatically correct, and "safe" is used as adverb modifying "returning."
But I'm not sure #2 is grammatically correct or not.

Thank you!
