hello!! I am working with a text and I do not know the connotations of some modal verbs.
In "further work has shown that long-term memory can be stimulated" can expresses possibility, probability or aility? I think that is possibility and probability.
And in "If there is a real prospect that these effects might one day be treated successfully...." might expresses hypothesis?? or possibility.

Thank you very much

Hello Hergest. I'd say the first one is 'possibility' ~ it is possible to stimulate long-term memory. And the second one I'd call ... erm ... I'm having a big long think ... 'hypothetical possibility' ~ it is theoretically possible that these effects will one day be treated.

    thank you !!

After thinking and thinking I concluded that in the first case it is ability as it is a passive. " memory is able to be stimulated because it is sure that can be stimulated.
You have solved the problem with might..

thank you for your help and ideas
