‘This was no captive bird. That’s a USGS band. You can read the unique number through the scope. The swan was ringed in the wild in the States and we’ll find out the date and the exact location of its ringing.
Source : Blue Lightning by Ann Cleeves
Context: Dougie had spotted a trumpeter swan, a first in Britain. He notified other birdies at the field centre in Fair Isle and they relocated the bird. Hugh is looking at it with binoculars as he said the excerpt quotation.

What does captive bird refer to in natural science?

Glossary:
captive: kept as a prisoner or in a confined space; unable to escape: captive breeding (= the breeding of wild animals in zoos, etc.)

The United States Geological Survey (USGS, formerly simply Geological Survey) is a scientific agency of the United States government.

Thank you.

Thank you. So the speaker means this bird does not belong to Fair Isle bird sanctunary. It is indeed a migrant bird. Right?
