Is the name of the storage yard for towed vehicles different from city to city?

I don't know. I've only ever heard it called an "impound lot."

I suspect that impound yard can be used. I cannot say if it is a regional expression, though.

In New York City, we call them "tow pounds".

In Chicago we called them car pounds
(or on the North side; The f-----g Lincoln Tow yard)

I don't think I've ever refered to the actual space where cars are stored.

I would naturally say:

I am going to retrieve my car from the towing company.
