My try: Its natural beauty is one of its main features. Here you can find stunning beaches and unmatched mountains to switch off from work.

To me characteristics sounds much more long winded than features and sounds a very literal translation - something you might find on a technical data sheet, rather than a tourism leaflet, for example. You might want to use it to avoid repetition, but generally I would try and avoid using it as a straight translation from the Spanish.

A feature is like a main attraction. A characteristic is an attribute. For example: "A characteristic of the water park's main feature, the Lazy Lagoon, is its incredibly fast current."

For me, I generally would use "feature" to describe aspects that are observable. For example, if you complimented a person's features, you might be referring to their eye color or cheek bone structure, whereas if you compliment their characteristics, that might apply to their humor, friendliness, etc. That's not to say that characteristics can't be observable, though. I think in your example "feature" works better because of grindios's reasoning -- it's a main thing that it has to offer. This logic also applies to products as well. You would talk about the features available on the new iPhone, but not its characteristics.
