Bonjour,
Je suis actuellement au Canada et je voulais écrire un rapport de stage en anglais en mentionnant le mot carter, comme protection du moteur. Votre traduction est sump pour l'automobile et housing dans cas général or ici ils utilisent housing pour désigner le carter de la voiture.

The translations 'case', 'casing', and 'housing' have no usage tags, which means they are suitable for use in most if not all contexts. The fact that we have a specific automobile translation does not mean that you cannot use the general term as well.
