I understand each of the component words but I can't make sense of them taken together. Is this expression idiomatic?

The context: someone is picking up a couple of books in a bookstore, admittedly surreptitiously because he plans to steal them. Location: again, Buenos Aires.

    Toca los libros, casi de espaldas, mientras mira el pibe que está sentado del otro lado vigilando.
    He touch the books, almost at his back, simultaneously, he take a look at seated boy, whom is watching from the other side.
