C'est malade !

J'ai une toute petite question - est-ce je peux utiliser "c'est malade!" pour dire "it's sick!"? I mean 'sick' with the connotations of 'cool', 'wicked', etc.

C'est malade is good. Or c'est dingue. More formal: c'est fou. And in Quebec: c'est capoté !

Don't use C'est malade, it doesn't mean anything; use c'est fou, c'est incroyable

Many of my friends are Québecois and they all use "c'est malade" to say "that's sick or that's ill" (as in cool/wicked) but it's a younger generation thing - they are all aged 20-25-ish. The french students that I teach also use it.

Sans doute. Nous dirons que c'est un canadianisme. Jamais je n'ai entendu cette expression en france.

Sorry, but "c'est malade" is not a "canadianisme". A "canadianisme de bon aloi" is a word used in Canada, often referring to a reality that does not exist in Europe, and that has roots in French.

The phrase "c'est malade" is an "anglicisme" based on an English phrase (i.e. That's sick...) and exists because of the use of this phrase amongst bilinguals and young people who want to appear "with it". I am Canadian (born in Manitoba in a French-speaking community) and I would never use it. There are numerous French phrases that reflect the same idea....
