channel his inner fox

What does "channel fox" mean in this context (football/soccer)?

GOAL! There is that third goal, and it is Gerard Pique who gets it with a poacher's effort!
Cillessen will take some of the blame, though, having allowed Griezmann's low strike to squirm under his body and against the inside of the post. Pique channels his inner fox in the box to pounce on the loose ball, reacting much quicker than anyone else to tap home the rebound from close range!

The above-mentioned videos show foxes stealing something and running off with it. Pique is displaying this characteristic, as if calling on the fox-like spirit within him.

I'm not a big sports expert, but according to one website, "A fox in the box is a term used to describe a player, who when they are positioned in the penalty area, is an excellent goal scorer. Although this player may not be the most skilled goal scorer on the team, they tend to have great success when they are in the box." Maybe sports fans can amplify this. :)

"To channel one's inner [X]" is a common phrase, meaning roughly "to draw on some hidden aspect of the personality."
