Hello! What's the difference between "character" and "personality"? Why can only the first complete the following sentence?
If I had to write myself a ... reference, I'd describe myself as quiet rather than outgoing.
Thank you.

The term "character reference" is a set phrase, which you can find in the WR dictionary:

    http://www.wordreference.com/definition/character+reference
I haven't looked up the above, for lack of time, so this observation may be superfluous:
One major difference is that "character" has moral overtones - the person has developed his/her character by the way they have lived their life. "Personality" is innate. That is why we say a "character reference" - this lists their sobriety, integrity etc.
