Chemin de Damas

Hello everyone,
I am working on a dense text on post-colonialism in France and the sentence refers to post 1968 intellectuals who regret their previous pro-Communist stance:

  • "une partie importante de l’intelligentsia établie n’arrete plus de se battre la coulpe et croit trouver dans la croisade anti-totalitaire son nouveau chemin de Damas."
  • "a sizeable percentage of the established intelligentsia would not stop publicly confessing? / asking for penance? and thought they had found their new road to Damas (?) in the crusade against totalitarian states.
So much wrong with this sentence - so little time. Any ideas are exceedingly welcome.
