chubby Jewish girl

Hello,

Here is the context:
Miami, 1959. A young man talks to his stepmum (who is not much older than he is) who is crying. She is not fat at all. You might say she has nice curves, but that's about it, and she is very beautiful:

Why is there a chubby Jewish girl sobbing in our coffee shop? (she's sitting at a table on the terrace of the luxury hotel owned by the family).

Do you think chubby girl is supposed to be adressed to a little girl rather than to a woman and that here, he talks to her as if she was a little girl? The choice of to sob makes me think it could be the right interpretation.

Or that he actually adresses the woman and that chubby is to be understood as pulpeuse?

Thanks a lot for your help!
