What are those black and white things dirictors for movies and such use. They have like, the scene and trial written on it.

    "Clapper" or "clap board", which unlike "clapboard" is always pronounced with a p sound followed by a b sound.

    EDIT: Now I think the clapper is just the top part, and the bottom part is the slate or slate board. The whole thing then would be a "clap board". It functions as a marker to assist in synchronizing sound with picture.

    You are absolutely correct as to the functionality of this basic gadget. The link offered by katie_here says it all.
    However, in the UK at least, they are indeed called clapper boards, and not "clap boards" :p
