    American English
Context: The farmer cleared the woods to make room for new growth.

Context #2: Basically, your woods on a farm should be cleared every once in a while (it's not very frequent). You go in and saw down the biggest trees, and drag them out of the forest and take them to a sawmill, etc.

    ... hat den Wald _____?

    I have no clue.

Auslichten and ausdünnen are terms used in such contexts. Both may refer to cutting down trees as well as to the removal of scub and undergrowth or even to pruning. Another term is aushauen -- but it might be of regional usage and therefore require additional explanation as to what exactly you are talking about.
