The lieutenant called through a closed hutch to his secretary, and told her to get a number for whatever captain or commissioner or other fancy rank was top boy in the Billings PD, over in Montana. And then to dial it, and put it on line one.

What does closed hutch mean? The scene is taking place at a police station and not an animal farm.

    Had you looked in the dictionary, you would would not be confused by animals.

    Yes but hutch, whether animal cage or piece of furniture, makes no sense in the OP's sentence, and hatch (as suggested by H G-T) does. It looks like an OCR error. Here's an open hatch:

    Thank you. I assume the lieutenant’s office is equiped with some hatch that connects him to his secretary.
