closest we'll ever really come to escape

Hi, everyone.
The following is from "The Science of storytelling" by Will Storr.
I don't get any clue of what the underlined "the closest we’ll ever really come to escape" mean.

But story offers more than just this. Locked inside the black vault of our skulls, stuck forever in the solitude of our own hallucinated universe, story is a portal, a hallucination within the hallucination, the closest we’ll ever really come to escape.

the closest we'll ever come to escaping - you cannot really escape, but hearing a story will make you forget where you are whilst listening, and that temporary oblivion is the thing that is the closest to escaping for real...
