coherence or coherency

Could someone please inform me when the use of coherence is best advised and the same for coherency.

    I don't think I can name a situation in which coherency would ever be preferred over coherence.

    In linguistics, though, a distinction is made between coherence and cohesion; as I understand it, a sequence of sentences may be cohesive -- that is, parse correctly and fit together -- but not coherent, which requires that they make 'real-world' sense.

    Although coherency appears in some dictionaries, it seems that coherence has prevailed over it in usage.
