In English writing classes, teachers often talk about coherence and cohesion. While I understand that coherence has to do with all the textual parts being linked in a way that makes good sense, the concept of cohesion has escaped me. Can anyone explain the difference between the two terms?

Cohesiveness deals with the way in which the elements of the text are linked together ("and", "therefore", "moreover", "on the other hand", etc.). Coherence deals with whether or not the sentence or phrase makes sense.
