Hello all.

I have a questions about the collective number "millier".

About one thousand X = un millier de X
About two thousand X = deux milliers de X
About one hundred thousand X = une centaine de milliers de X

Would it ever be possible to say, for example, une troisaine de milliers de X? Or is the une ____aine de milliers de X reserved for numbers over one hundred? Is it like how in English you would say "hundreds of thousands", but not "threes of thousands"?

Merci à tous!

You can't say "une troisaine de milliers" for instance (only "trois mille")
but yes, "une dizaine, une vingtaine, une trentaine .... une centaine de milliers," mais pas "une millème de milliers" (only "mille")
    does it help ?

    Yes, that is helpful.

But I'm still a little confused as to where one draws the line.

So, if you want to say "about 2,000 bikes", you would say "deux milliers de vélos", not "une deuxaine de milliers de vélos". "About 10,000 bikes", on the other hand, would be "une dixaine de milliers de vélos."

At what point does the formulation une ____aine de milliers become OK? Or perhaps the question I should be asking is, when is it not OK? Just with numbers less than 10?

    Thanks!

    Thanks!

OK, I think I understand. The only time you can use une ___aine de milliers is with multiples of 10, and the unique exception of 15?

Everything else is just ___ milliers de?

About 20,000 spectators = une vingtaine de milliers de spectateurs
About 23,000 spectators = vingt-trois milliers de spectateurs

    Thank you all so much!

About 23,000 spectators = vingt-trois milliers de spectateurs not really : vingt-trois mille spectateurs sounds more natural

    Thank you all so much!
