Hello All,

Bill Bryson opens his famous book 'The lost continent: travels in small-town America' with the line ...'I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to.'
Can anyone tell me why he did not write 'I came from Des Moines.'

Regards,
Sham

"I come from Des Moines." means "I was born or grew up in Des Moines." or in some contexts "My home is in Des Moines." In either case, this is something that is still true in the present.
"I came from Des Moines." Before I was here, I was in Des Moines and I travelled to here. This describes an event that happened in the past.
