Is comma redundant in the sentence below?

In fact, manufacturing is also caught up in a global whirlwind.

Please suggest.

  • Comma indicates a brief pause. So comma is necessary. If pause is unimportant, comma may be unwarranted.

Well, the problem is comma is not there in the original sentence. Does this alter the meaning of the sentence in any way?

The use of the comma would make no difference to the meaning of the sentence. With or without, it means the same. I think it reads much better with the comma inserted.

For me, the value of the comma there is to separate the two nouns. Otherwise, one could be tempted to read them as a compound noun "fact manufacturing".
