Hi guys,

I've checked the theory on commas before "as" and "which", but I'm still confused.

Would you please tell me what's correct in the following sentence, where would you put the commas?

The sentence without commas:

The sauce is easy to make as there is no need to cook out the flour which is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.

My suggestion:

The white sauce recipe is easy to make as there is no need to cook out the flour, which is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.

And another suggestion:

The white sauce recipe is easy to make; there is no need to cook out the flour, which is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.

What is your opinion on this? I appreciate your help.

  • I prefer the version with the comma:

The white sauce recipe is easy to make as there is no need to cook out the flour, which is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.

    And another suggestion:

The white sauce recipe is easy to make as there is no need to cook out the flour; this is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.

I would prefer a comma before as and a comma before which. "The sauce is easy to make" is a complete idea, and the as begins an explanation of it. Similarly, "there is no need to cook out the flour" is a complete idea, and the which clause tells something about that whole idea.

And for the version without as, I would use a colon instead of a semicolon, since what follows explains what precedes.

The white sauce recipe is easy to make as there is no need to cook out the flour, which is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.
I agree with the comma you inserted, and I'd add one after "make" as well.

    And another suggestion:

The white sauce recipe is easy to make; there is no need to cook out the flour, which is one of the benefits of using gluten-free flour.
This is also fine, and I agree with the semicolon.
