comma before 'but' [conjunction]: a similiar, but cheaper, solution

just a simple question...
To my eyes it looks better to write

A similiar but cheaper solution....

instead of using commas

A similiar, but cheaper, solution....

Do you agree with me? :)

    Some reference sources suggest that commas that might be called for by the sentence structure can be omitted in short sentences if there is no risk of confusion.
