comma between weekday and date: on Monday, 25 January

This has always bothered me: should there be a comma in a sentence such as in the title or e.g. "The event has been postponed and will now take place on Monday, 25 January(, 2011)." That is, between the weekday and the date. I think I've seen it both with and without the comma - which do you feel is more correct?

Thank you for your insight.

  • I have no preference here. Dates are always written in a somewhat stylized way that doesn't exactly correspond to how we say them, so the usual intonational justification for a comma or not doesn't apply here.
