Brown sugar added to the water that the rice paper is passed through gives them a delicious caramel crunch.

Doesn't it look better with a comma?

Brown sugar added to the water that the rice paper is passed through, gives them a delicious caramel crunch.

Or is it?

Brown sugar, added to the water that the rice paper is passed through, gives them a delicious caramel crunch.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I vote for your third attempt. I'd say that it's helpful to the reader to have this 'added to the water that...' clause hived off with commas, making it clear(er) what provides the crunch.

I'm presuming that this is your own composition.

It's my friend's creation, and I'm reading after her. Thank you for confirming my original decision; I'm not a native speaker, so being right feels good.
