Abortion-rights advocates say the need exists for late-term abortions, in cases of extraordinary genetic defects and other dire health circumstances, and some had worried that only a few physicians would be willing to provide such care after Dr. Tiller’s killing, an act prosecutors say was carried out by an abortion foe.---taken from The New York Times

Dear all,

Is there a comma missing after the "an act prosecutors say" ? I think the bolded bit is a parenthesis that should be enclosed by a pair of commas. Am I right? Thanks.

  • No, no need. The entire phrase after the comma refers to the "killing" that precedes it. This is not the same construction as: "Forum members say, 'Listen to our advice.'" It more on the order of "Every morning the two women say hello to me."

    I've got it, Mr. Copyright.

The "an act" must be refering to the killing. Am I right?
