Hi there/ Bonjour

Je cherche à traduire, en gros, l'idée suivante:

"Comme pour donner raison à ceux qui pensaient que la CE ne pouvait devenir une puissance militaire, les premiers pas vers une défence commune se sont soldé par des échecs."

"As if to prove the case of those who"..?

    Thanks for your answer.

    The thing is that I'd like to give the idea that there is the intention of the events to prove those people right ("comme pour").
    (Obviously, the events did not actually intend to prove them right, but it was obvious that they were right... But I'm getting lost here!)

    Is it grammatically correct to say: "As if to prove the case of..."?
