common: "there could be a common underlying physiological abnormality"

"The psychiatric disorder that has been most widely studied is clinical depression. The findings suggest that the presence of depres- sion within a family increases the risk that daughters will develop an eating problem. We do not know what mechanism might be respon- sible for this association. On the one hand, there could be a common underlying physiological abnormality, such as a defect in the regula- tion of serotonin in the brain, a chemical thought to be involved in both depression and the control of food intake. On the other hand, it could be the environmental influence on the child of being brought up by a depressed parent." C. Fairburn 'Overcoming binge eating'

What do you think 'common' means here?
1) Occurring frequently or habitually; usual (like popular)
2) Most widely known; ordinary

Of course, you're right, one common underlying mechanism - serotonin is involved in both depression and the control of food intake. Thanks a lot.
