Hi, i want to start a sentence with "to understand" but don't know if i can use "comprendre" alone. The sentence that I'm having difficulties with is: "Comprendre l'importance du festival, il faut commencer à ses raccines"

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

I'd do this: "Pour comprendre l'importance du festival, il faut commencer par ses origines/racines." Note that the "to" in "to understand" is really in this case an abbreviation of "in order to", so we need "pour" or "afin de" etc .

"Pour comprendre l'importance du festival, il faut commencer à ses racines"

    or rather,
"Pour comprendre l'importance du (de ce?) festival, il faut remonter à ses racines"

thankyou! I thought that it would be "pour comprendre" but didn't know if it was a good way to start a sentence/paragraph?

    Thanks
