Hello everyone,

From the book Thank You for Being Late by Thomas Friedman.

If you look back over human history, only a few energy sources fundamentally changed everything for most everyone—fire, electricity, and computing. And now, given where computing has arrived with the cloud, it is not an exaggeration to suggest that it’s becoming more profound than fire and electricity.

What does computing mean here - computers in general or computing power?

Thank you.

I take "computing" in your context to mean the use of computers, digital communications, data processing and storage and a variety of associated electronic equipment.

I think it implies not raw power, speed or capacity but rather the application of digital technology for a very wide range of activities and the impact this is having on the way we live.
