concevoir ses propres surfaces

This sentence is just so problematic to me; the only proposal of translation I will make is awfully litteraly, I know. May someone advice me, please?

Context: The work of a modern cloth designer
"Le besoin de concevoir ses propres surfaces procède"

I understand that "surface" refers to fabric, so I would say:

The need to create her own surfaces". Does that make sense? What do you think?

    British English
"The need to create her own fabrics prevails." ? (Je traduirais "procède" par 'prevails' ... je suppose que je l'ai bien compris en français?)
