Hi all, how can I understand the meaing of "conviction" here?

"I stood for a while watching them walk down the street, their hands in their jacket pockets. Bobby's stride was little and sure, Jonathan's slightly bowlegged in the way of adolescent boys who offer swagger in place of conviction."

Thanks,

Hi Minhduc. I suppose it means that adolescent boys often swagger to disguise their lack of self-confidence.

    Hello Minhduc,

Yes: 'conviction' here means belief in something, in this case the boys' masculinity and toughness.
