When I was living in Paraguay we would say "asado." As in, let's go over to that asado (BBQ) in Juan's backyard this afternoon.

The supper and the conversations went so well that my father invited him(mi maestro) to our house some time for a cookout with hamburgers and more.

COOKOUT= an outing at which a meal is cooked and served in the open

Barbecue= to roast or broil on a rack or revolving spit over or before a source of heat (as hot coals)
2 : to cook in a highly seasoned vinegar sauce

I think (at least in Spain) we say "barbacoa", generally talking.
The food people use to cook outside is not rice or soup... it's more like a barbecue, isn't it?
Not always. There is all kinds of foods cook outside "kabobs" (marinated in diferent sauces) and many more.
