cosmetics vs makeup

Senior Member
Hi Folks,

Could you please advise if cosmetics and makeup can be used interchangeably?

1) My sister does not like to wear cosmetics.
2) My sister does not like to wear makeup.

1) She has cosmetics on.
2) She has makeup on.

1) There's a lot of cosmetics on her desk.
2) There's a lot of makeup on her desk.

"Cosmetics" has a wider meaning. It can include make-up and other skin products.

I could say: I don't wear make-up, but I use cosmetics such as face cream because I have dry skin.
