Cough and flu

Senior Member
I have a cough. I have a flu.

Do we need double "a" when combining both into one?

1.I have a cough and a flu.
2.I have a cough and flu.

Which one is correct?

You almost never have 'a flu'. It is just 'flu'.

Partly because of this I would put 'flu' first, so it is clear that 'a' only refers to cough, but mainly I'd do it because flu is the more important of the two.
I have flu and a cough.
