yes, I also believe this a word play, but even so, a word play always refers to something. why counterFIFTH, not SIXTH?

Because 'countersixth' would not be recognizable as a pun on 'counterfeit.' It would not call 'counterfeit' to mind.

One hopes there is more to the use of 'fifth' than that of course. That it plays into the plotline. But you'd have to read the book to know that.

This is the fifth album in the "100 Bullets" series. There are 10 volumes altogether, and each title contains a reference to the volume number (except no 3):
    1. First Shot, Last Call
    2. Split Second Chance
    3. Hang up on the Hang Low
    4. A Foregone Tomorrow
    5. The Counterfifth Detective
    6. Six Feet Under The Gun
    7. Samurai (reference to the film "Seven Samurai")
    8. The Hard Way (reference to craps)
    9. Strychnine Lives
    10. Decayed
See the Wikipedia entry for "100 bullets". It appears that I'm not allowed to post a direct link to the article.

Good thinking jalmari, and welcome to WordReference.

Unfortunately for your theory, the Counterfifth Detective appeared in the first-fourth volumes as well :)
