crank oneself up

< Previous | Next >
Hi. I have to translate a text about Apollo 13 and I came across this phrase which I don't really understand, so any kind of help you can offer, either an explanation or a translation would help.

Kranz, a buzz-cut ex-fighter pilot would crank himself up for a challenging day at work by playing "Stars and Stripes Forever" in his head.

I think it might mean something like "Kranz (...) se daba ánimos en un día difícil de trabajo repitiendo la tonada de Stars and Stripes Forever"

    Hi!

Yes I think you've got the idea, except that I understood from the text that the "cranking up" took place before his day at work, more in the sense of "he prepared himself for".
