Hi,

I'm translating a book about photography and I can't understand the meaning of this expression. I have no clue what it means. It's talking about how difficult taking a picture was in the past when digital cameras didn't exist. The sentence reads: "You had to crank the stop ring yourself".
Could anybody help me?

Thanks
