I think both sentences are correct but my books says only ‘cock’ is correct. I don’t know why. Could you explain to me?
1. We heard a cock crow in a neighbouring village.
2. We heard a cock crowing in a neighbouring village.
Thanks.

My mistake. I did not understand your original question: "I think both sentences are correct but my books says only ‘cock’ is correct. I don’t know why. Could you explain to me?"

    Both sentences are correct.
