crunch/crush

If a fork lift truck ran over my foot would it crunch or crush my foot? and if either of it could happen what is the difference between them?

    Hi Gorann,

    If, God forbid, a forklift were to run over your foot, it would certainly crush your foot.

    It might also crunch your foot but, to me, this would refer mostly to the sound that was created.

    It would most certainly crush your foot. However, the sound it might make while doing so would be a crunch! Crush means to squash violently - unless you are talking of the romantic notions of schoolchildren, but that is an entirely different context. Whereas crunch is the sound footsteps make as they walk over gravel or the noise you might make eating potato crisps or another "crunchy" food.
