Situation: There is a riot by a group of people in the streets. The police are trying to stop incidents and make people go away. Some of the people are sticked by the police or arrested. The police are shooting in the air to frighten the crowd. And at last people making the riot stopped and go away.

Example: The police quelled the riot at last.

I know the example is correct and idiomatic so I would like to ask the following.

1) The police crushed the riot at last.

2) The police quashed the riot at last.

Source: Self-made.

Thank you.

There is no single word, as far as I know.

The police baton-charged the rioters. The police used their batons on the rioters.
