if a gas pipeline is located further away, the health effects derived from a potential gas leak on the people in its surroundings will be fewer

    Gracias a todos.

The further away from populated areas a gas pipeline is located, the fewer / lesser will be the effects on the health of the people who live in the surrounding area, in the case of a leak.

You can interpret the effects as being either "fewer" (diminished in number) or "lesser" (diminished in extent).

The metaphorical "further" sounds strange here, Chris, and the "effects" being "lesser" poses a minor problem.

    Perhaps "the more distant..."

    Why not "farther?"

    "Farther" is fine.
