Looking for a translation of the above.

Is the following correct:

'Couper l'arbre d'elme était un sacrifice nécessaire'

    Elm tree is an unnecessary repetition in English -- it's not going to be an elm cat or an elm bicycle is it? So in French, an elm = un orme and no need for the arbre. For the rest, wait for a native speaker.
