How do you say "whelks" (like in seafood) in Welsh please? Thank you!

According to the dictionary at http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/learnwelsh/, "whelk" is gwchiad moch, and "whelks" is gwchiaid moch or gwchiadau moch.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what gwchiad in this compound means?
