Hello,

I would like to know a little more of the origin and etymology of the Czech word "krejčí", meaning "tailor".

I have tried to link it to the Czech verbs for "cutting", "sewing" or "needle" but none of these words is an actual match.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

  • It's ultimately from proto-Slavic *krojìti "to cut", "to slice", which in many languages was later narrowed down to "to cut fabric for making clothes"; cf. Rus. кроить (kroít' [kɾɐ'itʲ]), BCS krojiti.

In Polish there is "kroić" or somewhat obsolete 'krajać' (to cut), and 'tailor' is 'krawiec".
