Hello dear members,

for a long time, I am asking myself, whether there is a link between the German "Burg(/Berg)" (→ "castle(/mountain)" ) (please also briefly see this recent thread http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=2403584) and Arabic بُرْج (pronounced burǧ) (→ "castle/tower"), knowing that Arabic "ǧeem" [d͡ʒ] has merged from [g] (hence the transliteration).
For all I know, Semitic languages were and are not linked to Indo-European languages.
How, then, comes this obviously related meaning and seemingly related word? Is it a loan? Or a cognate?

Thanks and have fun whilst arguing! ;D
