Dagesh in שתיים/שתים

Why do both forms have a דָּגֵשׁ‎ in the ת? They're preceded by a vowel, aren't they? I mean, the first letter, ש, has a שְׁוָא נָע‎, just like its masculine counterpart, שנים.

Essentially, it used to be שִׁתַּיִם (from earlier šintaym), but it seems that the vowel was elided to shva after the time that the spirantization took place, and so the plosive was retained giving שְׁתַּיִם.
