"Jeg ved jeg har læst om ham og set ham tegnet da han etsteds i Afrika var."

Which of these sentences gets closer to what the above is saying?

I know I have read about him and seen him draw when he was somewhere in Africa.
I know I have read about him and seen him be drawn when he was somewhere in Africa.

It is difficult to say without more context, but my guess would be "...and seen a drawing of him ..."

Your first sentence could also be correct, but in that case, the writer must have been in Africa and watched him draw. If this is the same Norwegian letter from the 1870s, that is maybe unlikely?

I realize that I didn't read the sentence carefully enough. If "... and seen him draw ..." had been the right translation, the original should have been "... og set ham tegne ...". This just confirms that the translation should be "...and seen a drawing of him ...".
