I'm hoping to buy some traditional calligraphy, both secular and religious, in Kabul. Would "nastaleeq" be the appropriate word to let my Afghan friends know what I am looking for?

Hi, Ben. Yes, nastaleeq is the name of a style in calligraphy —probably a more popular style than some of the others. The actual term for the practice of calligraphy may well be any of these: khat, khataati, khosh-nevissi, all terms used this side of the border in Iran. Naturally, different words may exist over in Afghanistan. Still, I believe any of these keywords should help you communicate your intention to the local people. Good luck!
